We combine our user submitted reviews along with other reviews from Google, Facebook, Yelp, and the Public Utility Commission to grade providers.
Shell Energy may look familar. Shell (yes technically different than Shell Energy) is one of the largest oil and gas companies in the world. Shell's retail energy group has been oeprating under the name MP2 Energy, using the Shell logo for several years.
In December of 2023, Shell sold MP2 and it's retail energy business to Octopus Energy.
So while the brand 'Shell' is well known this actual iteration of the company as energy provider is relatively new. Octopus Energy has had pretty high marks so we would expect them to continue their apprach with the new to them Shell Energy brand.
Shell Energy Retail Limited, commonly known as Shell Energy, was a retail electricity and gas provider in the United Kingdom. It became a notable entity in the energy sector by offering a range of energy solutions, including electricity, gas, and broadband services, primarily to residential customers. The company aimed to distinguish itself in the competitive energy market through a commitment to renewable energy sources and customer service excellence.
In its operational strategy, Shell Energy emphasized sustainability, promising that 100% of the electricity supplied to its customers was backed by renewable sources, such as wind, solar, and biomass. This approach aligned with the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly energy options and the global transition towards greener energy sources.
Shell Energy also expanded its services to include broadband offerings, leveraging its infrastructure and customer base to provide internet services, further diversifying its product portfolio beyond traditional energy supply.
In a significant industry development, Shell Energy was acquired by Octopus Energy in December 2023. This acquisition marked a pivotal moment in the UK's energy sector, with Octopus Energy, known for its innovative approach to energy supply and customer service, integrating Shell Energy into its operations. The acquisition was seen as a strategic move to consolidate Octopus Energy's position in the market, expand its customer base, and enhance its capabilities in renewable energy and technology-driven services.
The transition of Shell Energy into the Octopus Energy fold represented a notable shift in the landscape of the UK energy market, potentially setting new benchmarks for service delivery, sustainability, and innovation in the sector.
Do not buy as a solar buy back. They way overcharge for the encor portion of you bill, instead of charging 4.1 cents per kwh for the net usage, they base it on gross usage (before minusing out the solar usage). I switched to rythm and my bill is now what I expected for having installed solar.
Everything is pretty good but they demand full SSN and refuse other id such as Tx drivers licence or passport The Social Security Site states they have no legal basis for this
Don’t use them for your energy needs. They make all kinds of errors on their end but won’t give you your money back. I requested a transfer to my new address and they confirmed that it would be done. Fast forward 2 weeks they never transferred the service to my new address and never canceled the service at the old address. Now they want me to pay for the week and a half that I was no longer at the old address and was under the impression service had been canceled. They never notified me that the transfer was not completed and that the old service was never canceled. I had to call them when I noticed my online account was not reflecting the new service address and they told me that to finalize a transfer I HAD to agree to pay all accrued costs on my old account. Absolutely RIDICULOUS since they failed to disconnect and also failed to inform me they had never disconnected the old service.
Olivia is an amazing representative! She is full of knowledge & very helpful. It was a pleasure allowing her to assist me with my energy needs !!!
It was actually very easy to sign up, I had no idea that Shell purchase solar energy from consumers. If you don't have the best credit they offer you a deposit option or a letter from your former electric company. Not bad
Won’t recommend Shell energy. Very poor customer service and management. They take more than a month to change a plan and meanwhile they put you on month to month without customer approval and charge ridiculous amount per kwh and on top on that 25% distribution charge on energy bill. They will not fix it even after calling although they will say they will make a note and supervisor calls and will look into it.
Switched from PowerNext to Shell. Had higher kwh on final full month bill with PowerNext with a TDU delivery charge of $8.92. First full bill with Shell (with lower kwh usage) had a TDU delivery charge of $82.32! OMG! It would literally be cheaper over a few months to pay the termination fee and go back to PowerNext. Feeling horribly deceived and angry.
Took 3 months to send me my first bill (which was 3 months at once) and double charged for the period between July 14 and July 18. Here it is November and still trying to get this addressed.
I had a great experience with them when I was in my apartment. I had to cancel because I was moving and my new location was with entergy so I could not choose my provider. I had to switch the cancel date 3 times and they were very accommodating. Their website is simple and easy to use. Their bills are very straight forward and laid out plainly for anyone to understand. Highly recommend them!
Do not use this company specifically for Solar Buy back. You will get very poor customer service to the point where you will feel that they really do not care about you or your business. I was happy initially to sign up with Shell Energy but for whatever reason the solar buy back plan I signed up for was not the service being provided and I was getting large bills. I called in (multiple times), also emailed the support (multiple times) only to finally get a support person that couldn't do anything about switching a service or fixing the bills. Now a month goes on, the continue to use my Solar as I supply the grid and still bill me for the wrong package, still I am unable to get the service fixed. Now they start adding "late fee's" to this bill, finally a manager says they will fix the late fee's at least and switch to the correct solar buyback plan but it will take another 2 months for it to show up and change. Of course the fee's aren't fixed, the plan is still the non solar plan and I continue to get bills and fee's. I called in for the last time (double digits at least) asking one last time to fix or I would switch, they didn't care and we ended our relationship. During the billing issues one manager placed the auto-payment on hold until they could fix it. Someone decided to bill me for the 400+ that I owed for services not provided, then followed up with a 500 dollar contract termination. I did not provide payment authorization. If this is the service you want then by all means sign up with Shell, I however have never given a bad review and I'm sorry that I had to today. You have been warned!
Horrible time to get an answer or reponse in a timely manner from customer service. Call centers not U.S. based. Will not be renewing. Thinking about paying the early termination fee to be done with them. UPDATE: Company's reply is just lip service. I've called the listed number multiple times and emailed since the reply. Issue still not resolved!!! Definitely canceling contract. Zero stars if possible.
I recently had solar panels installed and I am researching companies and their rates. I called Shell Energy to get details, and I was told to go on the website and all the info was there. When I asked if the import KWh rate as well as the buyback rate was there, the customer service rep, assured me it was. Well it wasn't....All their terms say is FAIR MARKET RATE. What is the fair marker rate for the buyback? Every other company I spoke to has a vastly different buy back rate so what do they consider fair??? If they can't provide the simpliest of answers I could only imagine how bad their service is when you have a bigger issues. I'll definelty not recommend Shell to anyone.
Update: I ended up switching services and unfortunately about to pay the cancellation fee. All in all, this company is a nightmare to deal with. They lack professionalism, are unreliable, and have very questionable practices. DO NOT sign up with them. Most of the time, customer service cannot even answer questions for you. Their mobile site is not user friendly and it is easy to make mistakes while paying on it. I have overpaid twice and now still waiting on customer service to refund my second overpayment. They have a 48 hour call back policy and they have not bothered calling back. When you talk to an agent, you can tell they’re not U.S. based so half of the time, you have to explain your issue over and over due to language barriers. At some point, I will be paying the early termination fee and getting out of this. Hands down the WORST energy company I’ve ever dealt with. Oh - and I had the same problem as another reviewer. They billed me for 3 months at once for my first initial bill which is why I had to resort to getting on a payment plan. To be on a payment plan there’s an additional cost although THEY are the reason why I’m on one. So unprofessional- and the cost of their delivery fees is outrageous.
Never heard of this company. Never done business with this company. Yet somehow they sent a collection agency after me. When I called and spoke to Jose, he said he did not have a record of my account there (cause there hasn’t been one) and that to resolve this issue I would need to file a police report. My local police suggest I file a forgery report. So, I will be reporting this company for forgery. Stop scamming people and get a job at Walmart. At least that’s honest work.
Absolutely crooks! I paid for service on Friday, representative said power would be here in 2 hours. Absolutely no power the entire weekend and I'm guessing none on Monday. Dishonest corporation to only take your money. Oncor has no connect order after my payment early Friday and you can't be reached. This is POWER for heating, for food, for lights, for living. And you failed to place my connect order while you are closed for business hours. You are a completely useless company there to only get money without actually providing any direct service. STAY AWAY!!!
I made a mistake to sign up with them and should have looked at the reviews. I enrolled online and got a message that enrollment did not go through and have to call them. I had to call 10 times ad reach out on Facebook to get a call back from them and then they told me to call Equifax which I never had to with any other company. Called Equifax and they had no issues and not even an inquiry and had to spend 20 minutes with Equifax. Tried 5 times again to reach Shell Energy and agent told me some system issue was there and she reprocessing it now then had me call Equifax. What a disaster? I said I would like to speak to a Manager and response no one is available and won’t have a chance to complain. What a great start for a new customer switching from TXU? Spent too much of my valuable time with them and would be looking to switch as soon as I can.
I took a solar buyback program and they say unused energy will rollover for each month but they never mentioned that it will expire each December. They say it is in the contract dammn it when you are selling product to customers in calls don't say half info and cheat the customers. Simple thing when you say rollover you should say it will expire each December otherwise say that you don't know about rollover then we go to contract, etc and check. Learn to be honest, create trust, sell the right way and get customers.
If you are thinking about signing up for there "solar plans" know that the real time is a rate they choose to pay you as little as possible. They do NOT monitor the production on a real time basis, there real time is when they decide to buy it. 1st month they paid me .08cents per kwh thos month it's 015 cents. So much for my solar investment, it's all going to my power company..
Someone needs to take a look at the credit requirements. My score is over 730, 0 missed/late payments, I do not have a massive amount of debt, and I'm in my late 30's(so I do have a full credit history). Why on Earth should I cough up a $250 deposit? I decided to go w/ another company that had a slightly better rate and didn't require me to pay a deposit after checking my credit.
Haven't had to leave a deposit, in order to begin electric service in over 10 years, but Shell required a $250 deposit, despite the fact that I haven't had a late bill in over 3 years.
I'm moving from @ShellEnergyHome & their confusing, expensive electricity rates, resulting in large bills, and customer services only says "...this is an estimate calculation" I'm tired of none sense jargon and pointless phone calls to solve this. Chao #energybills #shellenergy
Their agents and supervisors are not well trained on how to handle credit requests on TDU charges levied incorrectly by CenterPoint.
Don't do it, what a mistake I made just signing up for service. They make it so difficult to change it. They keep hanging up on me. the process is a nightmare!
COMPANY IS A FRAUD--COMPANY EMPLOYEES OR MANAGEMENT MADE FRAUDULENT ACCOUNTS AND HAVE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH FRAUDULENT CHARGES ON THIER CREDIT REPORTS THRU SOUTHWEST RECOVERY SERVICES--FILED COMPLAINT WITH FTC
Our mission is to provide accurate and helpful data and content to help you make an informed decision when comparing energy providers.
Plans and Rates:
We review all available plans from every licensed energy provider. Then we rank the lowest available rate from each provider. Providers then receive a rating based on what percentile their lowest plan ranks.
For example, Provider A has the 3rd lowest-priced plan, while Provider B has the 45th lowest-priced plan out of 46 providers who submitted plans to PUC. Provider A will have a rating of 5, while Provider B will have a rating of 1.
Customer Service:
We scrape online reviews from Google, Yelp, BBB, and Trust Pilot to determine what customers are saying about the provider. The rating reflects the aggregate of all online reviews.
Renewable Options:
The rating system is based on the availability of renewable energy options. A 5-star rating is awarded to entities that offer a fully renewable option, signifying 100% renewable energy usage. A 4-star rating is given to those that provide a mix of energy sources, with more than 50% coming from renewable sources. Entities with renewable energy options exceeding the state average of 31.1% receive a 3-star rating, while those offering less than 31.1% renewable options are rated with 2 stars. Lastly, a 1-star rating is assigned to those with no renewable energy options, indicating a lack of commitment to sustainable energy practices.
PUC Rating:
The Public Utility Commission publishes a rating for each provider based on the number of formal complaints filed against the provider in comparison to how many customers they have.
For example, a provider with 10 formal complaints out of 10,000 customers would have a 1-star rating whereas a provider with 10 complaints and 1,000,000 customers would have a 5-star rating.
The GridHacker rating uses a weighted average that prioritizes rates and customer service over renewable options and PUC rating. We do this because we feel that for most customers price and service are the two most important factors when they are shopping for an electricity plan.
